Grillz – Are They Safe to Wear?

Grillz – yes, that’s an accepted spelling. Teeth grillz or grills is having a moment among celebrities. Recently, we’ve seen Rita Ora showed off her shiny silver grill in Paris. Katy Perry also wore a giant grill “roar” at the VMAs. And Rihanna, wore a tiny cross grill between her front teeth at the same event. Madonna has all been photographed wearing these grillz recently. What started as an accessory for young ballers, gangsters, and hip-hop artists seem to have reached its peak in the early aughts during the 80’s, is now a girl thing, as well.

Also known as “fronts,” these are fashionable covers often made of silver and gold. Some are jewel-encrusted that snap over one or more of the teeth. They are mostly removable but some are permanent where they have had their teeth altered with silver or crowns. There are also some who have tried to attach their grillz with glue—something that is dangerous because this can damage the teeth and tissues! As of this writing, there are no studies yet that prove that grills are harmful to our mouth—but there are no studies that show that they are safe to wear, either. Some grills are made from metals that can cause irritation or allergic reactions.

If you wear grillz, you must be extra careful about brushing and flossing your teeth to prevent dental problems. Food may be trapped between your teeth which can allow bacteria to collect and cause tooth decay and even harm gum tissues. This can cause bacteria build-up which may also contribute to bad breath.

To prevent problems like this, you can simply limit the amount of time spent wearing the teeth grills. If you have one, you can remove it before eating. You must also clean them daily to remove bacteria and food debris. Please avoid using jewelry cleaners as these can be dangerous to ingest. If you are considering getting a gangsta grill, make sure you consult your dentist first. With Gangsta Grillz, we make sure that all the materials in our grill are safe so you won’t have to worry about breeding bacteria in your mouth. Grillz is trendy for the moment, but always remember “pearly white teeth” will never go out of style.
